IBC offers a full-time Pre-Professional Day Program for students ages 10-19. Led by Founding Artistic Director Alyona Yakovleva-Randall and rooted in the Russian tradition, IBC’s program is based on the Vaganova method and is dedicated to elevating the artistry and technique of serious-minded students who strive to have a professional career in ballet. Graduates of the PDP have accepted offers from professional companies and top university programs around the country.

Enrollment in the PDP is by audition or invitation only. Students may contact the Admissions Director to arrange a visit and audition at our studio when classes are in session. Interested students are also encouraged to attend one of our Summer Intensive auditions, which can also serve as a PDP audition for the coming school year.

If an in-person audition is not feasible, students may also send a short video link via YouTube or Dropbox of barre, center, and pointework along with an optional classical variation to contact@IndianaBalletConservatory.org.

This elite program is divided into three levels: Junior, Intermediate, and Advanced. Students train during the daytime hours in a carefully structured program that includes:

Ballet Technique
Pointe
Variations
Repertoire
Pas de Deux
Contemporary
Character
Choreography
& Gentlemen’s Classes

In addition, students gain performance experience in IBC’s two major annual productions and local festivals, one-on-one mentoring and instruction through optional private lessons for international competition preparation, along with career guidance and individualized attention from the IBC faculty within smaller class sizes. This program continues to grow in its prestige, and in just a few short years is now one of the most sought-after pre-professional programs for students seeking concentrated study from an unparalleled team of instructors.

Character

Character class exposes students to character technique and folk dances from various countries through the introduction of special barre and center exercises. Character dances are often danced in period costumes and shoes with hard heels. The evolution of folk dances is explored through the history of select countries, including both folk dances and character dances from classical ballet. Character class focuses on helping students better understand the subtleties and differences between different dances, characters, styles, and music in order to portray the correct feelings and emotion for each piece.

Variations & Repertoire

This class introduces students to various pieces and excerpts in the classical ballet repertoire. Students will learn classical variations as duets, trios, and corps de ballet (or “group”) work, while focusing on not only the technicality of the piece, but the artistic and historic meaning behind each character and movement. Variations class is of particular importance for those students striving for a professional career, and can be an added opportunity for a student to grow in technique, artistic awareness, performance quality, and endurance and stamina all at once.

Pas de Deux

Pas de Deux class introduces the art of ballet partnering. The two dancers must move in harmony, coordinating their movements and complimenting each other perfectly. Students must learn to develop complete trust in their partners, and the male dancer should be strong and confident enough to lift his partner easily and carefully. Stress is placed on developing strength and coordination of each pose and movement, for both the male and female dancers. Class exercises, as well as famous pas de deux from the classical ballet repertoire, will be taught.

Contemporary

The many ranges and styles of contemporary dance make it difficult to define in words, yet easy to identify due to its broad language of movement. Contemporary classes utilize the classical ballet foundation, while helping students explore moving outside of the basic frame of the body. Contemporary dancing keeps the beautiful lines of classical ballet, and uses more flexibility of the entire body to stretch those lines in order achieve a fuller range of motion. This, in turn, helps the students build an understanding of the different ways of expression through dance. Contemporary class is essential to a dancer’s complete education in that it allows students to experience alternative ways of movement, creating a dancer that is well versed and able to adapt to many different choreographic challenges.

Choreography

Choreography class is aimed at providing students with the tools and learning environment necessary to begin studying the art of crafting their own, original choreography. Through detailed instruction and analysis of choreographic components, students will work to create various pieces in the contemporary ballet language, taking into consideration musical choices, artistic variety, and clarity of style. This class provides a unique opportunity for students to develop their own artistic expression, while expanding their knowledge and vocabulary of contemporary movement.

May 27-June 20 (4 weeks)

IBC offers ongoing summer evening classes for all Preparatory & Pre-Professional levels to ensure students receive a consistency in training and education throughout the summer.

Summer is the prime time to focus on improvement in ballet in all levels; without the added stress of school or other commitments, students are able to better concentrate on their technique and make meaningful improvements prior to the fall semester. It is also highly recommended that all Pre-Professional Division students attend a minimum of two-three weeks in Summer Intensive and Prep 3/4 students attend one-two weeks in Young Dancer Intensive.

In order to accommodate for active summer lifestyles, families may register for individual classes or for the entire session. Typically, classes are offered once per week for Preparatory levels, and up to 3 times per week for Pre-Professional students during the 4-6 week summer session.
